Picture Book Look

Picture Book Review Blog

on December 26, 2015

We are smack dab in the middle of the holidays, and this seems to be the general time in which I decide to wade out into new creative waters, if you will.

Last Christmas, I transitioned from creating edible art (read decorated sugar cookies) to creating works of art, such as drawings and paintings. I did a good job of staying creative, if not of blogging about it, until August, when we sold our home and moved. Since then, it’s been a continual battle to find time for art, and art hasn’t been very good at winning any of those battles.

So here we are. Again. At Christmas. It’s time for my annual “self inflicted creative challenge” apparently. And I’m up for it. As a matter of fact, this little creative nugget has been one I’ve danced around for about five years. It’s amazing because it combines several things I love- reading picture books, writing and putting something of value “out there” for others.

I had the idea of reviewing picture books while still home schooling several years ago. I thought it would be a neat way to engage my two kiddos in reading and writing and I though we could have fun along the way, because who doesn’t have fun with picture books? If you don’t, then this isn’t going to be a blog for you and I seriously question your sense of taste. I digress. Anyway, I even had a name for the blog-to-be; For Kids by Kids. But, ideas have a way of slipping through our fingers and before you know it, you are off on a different path, taking on different challenges.

But my love for picture books hasn’t faded and my desire to read as many as I can continues to grow, as does my desire to write picture books. And they always say the best way to become a good writer is to be an avid reader. To model your writing after good writing. To see into the piece and notice how it is put together and why. So, once again I’m thinking of that as yet nonexistant picture book review blog that has been on my mind for years.

I have a few kinks to work out, such as how I would go about obtaining the books to review and exactly what parameters would need to be put into place to even begin to undertake such a blog, but I’ve made the decision to dust off that old dream and see what I might be able to do with it in 2016.

Here’s hoping your 2015 was filled with creativity, and that 2016 brings more of the same.

  1. I love this post! It’s exactly what happened to me, writing has always beeny first love, but like you said things and life happens and before you know it some of your visions end up in the back burner! I lover your passion you have for picture books, and really hope you do explore writing one, it will be a great thing to scratch off of you ” to do list”. I will continue to support because I myself LOVE BOOKS, and I work with kids so I constant reading to them, it would be a great way to get ideas.

    • Thank you, abundantlyyours! Perfect example of life . . . Today I cared for my niece so that my sis and hubby could go to the movies. Then, my own two kiddos invited me to watch movies with them when I could have been doing a second installment on the blog. Which did I pick? Family! Everything else will work out. 😉 I hope I can give you some ideas for your reading!
